In the 10th year of the 4th Era, ten years after the death of Martin Septim, the Potentate, Ocato of Firsthold, was
assassinated- many say by Thalmor agents. The truth to this is not known, for no official investigation was launched; in
the aftermath of his death, with no clear successor, the Empire split apart into fragments. It is true that the Thalmor
gained the most, able to take over most of the Summerset Isles without the watchful eye of the worried Potentate over
them. With the empire in splinters, the Stormcrown Interregnum had begun.
More than a decade after the death of the Potentate, little change had come, only bloodshed. Janus Hassildor, the count of
Skingrad, knew that it must stop; and who better to stop it than the most powerful Count in Cyrodiil? After a lengthy
discussion and several concessions, Hassildor came to an agreement with the Countess of Leyawiin to begin the task of
restoring the Empire. Together, they and their militaries marched on Bravil and secured the loyalty of the Count...
with a bit of forceful coercion. The three armies marched on the Imperial City, controlled by Dolus Septim, a venal
pretender claiming to be Martin's son. They deposed and exiled him, and after securing the Heartlands, Count Janus
was declared High Chancellor and acting Potenate in absence of an Emperor.
Shortly after a decent ruler was restored to the Ruby Throne, the Jarl of Haafingar declared her loyalty and allegiance
to the Empire, though given her remoteness, the declaration was symbolic at best. Sensing the way the winds were blowing,
the Kingdom of Altmeris, a rebel group dedicated to defeating the Thalmor, declared allegiance to the Empire... in
exchange for assistance retaking Alinor.
Two similar agreements were made a short time later. The Mane of Elsweyr, power waning, joined the Empire in exchange for all of Elsweyr; and the Forsworn of the Reach pledged their power to the Empire if they were given autonomy of the Reach.
The imperial forces in Haafingar marched south to join the Forsworn, and following several attacks and the Siege of Markarth, the corrupt Jarl was deposed, and the Reach returned to Reachman rule... within the Empire. With the silver mines of Tamriel flowing into the Empire's coffers and the most defensible city in Skyrim taken, the other major holds one by one accepted Imperial rule; first Eastmarch, then Whiterun, and Riften all joined the Empire, whether from threat of attack or from persuasion.
Following the deliberations of the Elder Council and many heated debates, Potentate Hassildor gave up his title to the new Emperor- Faustus Carvain, count of Bruma.
